Poppy’s Story: A Tiny but Mighty Miracle
Wednesday 24th Sep
March 28, 2019: the proudest day of Madeleine and Jarred’s life.
Poppy, couldn’t wait to meet her parents. She arrived early at just 30 weeks and 2 days, weighing a tiny 1.21kg — small but incredibly strong.
For the next seven weeks, Poppy was cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU 1 & 2), which provides specialised support for critically ill or premature newborns, and the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU 1 & 2), where babies continue to grow and develop before going home. She was also closely managed by the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) team, who support women and babies with complex or high-risk pregnancies.
Madeleine’s pregnancy had always been considered high risk. In 2004, as a teenager, she experienced renal failure (kidney failure) and spent a significant amount of time at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where she received her first kidney transplant. Not long after Poppy was born, Madeleine required a second kidney transplant, another testament to her strength and resilience.
Through it all, Madeleine and Jarred were surrounded by the incredible doctors, nurses and specialists at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Their journey was not without challenges, but the care they received gave them confidence, hope, and the greatest gift of all, their daughter.
Today, Poppy is their miracle baby and their proudest achievement in life. Their experience as a family was overwhelmingly positive, and they remain deeply grateful to the hospital staff who supported them every step of the way.
